Review: Guardians of the Galaxy

Standard

“Better than Star Wars”

“It’s just like Avengers Assemble, but set in space”

“I am Groot”

and many other things had been said to me by friends about the latest Marvel movie, Guardians of the Galaxy.  Everything that I heard about the film only made me look forward to seeing it more.  But did it live up to these outlandish and confusing comments?GuardiansoftheGalaxy

Everything about this film was very, very much to my taste.  The sense of humour was fun and cheeky, the action was full on, the acting was strong, the villain was nasty and the heroes were lovable.

Review: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Standard

I am not a fan of the concept of the Planet of the Apes films. It’s not the thought of monkeys taking control of the Planet that bothers me, but the thought of talking apes.

This was definitely my impression when I first saw a trailer for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. At the time I had not seen the first one (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) in the series reboot. I was not in anyway interested in watching films with CGI talking monkeys, it looked to be rather ridiculous.

Review: How to train your Dragon 2

Standard

Short review: Awesome fun.

2 year old review: Dragons ROAR!

image

Slightly longer review: I absolutely loved the first How to train your Dragon and found myself excited and nervous going to see the sequel. The first took the original book’s ideas, totally flipped them all on their head and made a film that was fun, heartfelt and totally different from the source material.

This film takes all of the ideas from the first and does a wonderful job of building upon then and mixing in a few new ones.

The biggest difference for me seeing this film was that I went to see the first one just with my wife whereas the sequel we went to see with our two girls. Artemis slept through the whole film and Ophelia was completely gripped by it from start to finish, occasionally yelling ROAR at the screen and at times turning to the people say behind us to announce DRAGONS whilst pointing at the screen.

We all loved it.
